Office building Ruyterkade

New office building

For a location on the Ruyterkade in Amsterdam we have designed an office building. The Ruyterkade is a special quay where a row of buildings from different periods, from the nineteenth century to the present, feature a typical historic ambience and image and simultaneously is sandwiched between the large-scale redevelopment of the Train Station Island and Piet Hein Kade. This ambiguity of history and future is also part of the urban plan. The city is looking for a mix of history and innovation: preservation of the historical picture of the existing buildings and integrating it into the big and special volumes that reflect new developments. Our proposal is that the facade of the historical order-2 building is embedded into the new façade, according to our interpretation of the interplay of verticality and horizontality that characterizes historic buildings in Amsterdam. This creates a new and contemporary ensemble.
